$1,000 was hidden in San Francisco. 337 players registered, 208 of them new that week. The case opened at noon and the first player stood at the feet of three bronze firemen in Washington Square, answered one last question, and pressed the button at 12:38 PM PT. 121 players opened the case. 48 found the number in the soundtrack. 18 cracked the ledger. 4 reached the heroes.
The last question, and the answer that won
What is the difference between a thief and a hero?
Nothing they do, only who it is for. A thief carries something away from people; a hero carries someone out. Everyone on this square is remembered for carrying someone out.

The case opens on every phone at once. The letter is a link to a soundtrack and nothing else.
Nobody has the number. Two hundred guesses, all song titles. The first hint goes out: someone is windsurfing between the fourth and fifth minute.
Two players are already standing in the park. The ledger hint goes out and the pack starts moving.
Two players read the carving at the feet of the heroes fifteen seconds apart.
One answer to the last question passes. The button is pressed. Claimed.
Players keep going for the story. 1,251 minutes on the case by five.
A soundtrack with a number hidden in one frame. A ledger of one hundred tokens whose memos were song titles, readable only by the amount paid on each row, then unscrambled twice with the number from the sail. It named a park. At the feet of the heroes in that park, a sculptor left his name and a year, and the phone had to be standing there to enter it. Then one question, read by a machine: what is the difference between a thief and a hero.
